Any harm to windows 10 if you shut down system during (downloading. Pc accidently shut down during. Solved Laptop shut down and won't charge while updating to. Windows 7 sometimes tells us 'Do not shutdown your computer' and wait for. Happen if I shutdown Windows while it installs system updates? Beer while running. ![]() Best Answer: Thumbs up to Mike +1 edit - I'll also give one since the other guy pointed out it is bad to force a shutdown. First, you are interrupting the update process. Generally, there are system files that need to be removed, replaced, updated, or added. Then, the pointers in other places like the registry need to be corrected, too. By interrupting this, it is kind of like closing your eyes while the grocery cashier counts your change. - You know they started, but who knows where they finished, or whether it is correct. Second, the only way to actually do this is to force the system power off. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Any time you force-power-down (or accidentally power off) and not the 'graceful shutdown', you are damaging the hard disk. Each time, it is only a tiny bit of damage on a huge disk. But eventually that tiny spot is going to hit something important - or accumulate lots of spots into something larger. If you really must have the ability to shut the computer down on a moment's notice, there are two ways you can try: 1) use the command line and tell the machine to shutdown now (forced) EDIT: I didn't like the way this looked formatted, so I am adding an extra line break (shutdown +Force + Time to wait 1 second) > shutdown /f /t 01 2) reconfigure the way windows updates are done, so you decide when to install them. --then, make sure you follow up, twice a week - give or take - you should be manually checking to see if there are more updates available from the website (you might not have downloaded all), and install them on your schedule. There are probably more than just these two, but this was a quick, off-the top of my head answer. Mike, On shutting down my pc last night, the notice advised me that updates would be installed. So I created a restore point and proceeded to shut down. I was shocked to see that 255 updates would be installed. I thought; 'Okay, I'll leave it running all night and allow the updates to be intalled'. This morning I discover the updates procedure had reached 198 of 255 updates. The time now is: 12:35, and the updating process is still at 198 of 255. That's 12 hours! Is it usual for the installation of updates to take this long? Another answer I read said that updates can take up to several days to complete. Is this true? I've been using Microsoft computers since 1993. I'm just a domestic user who can fix many problems, but this one is bugging me; Is my computer caught in a loop? Should I leave it running for however long it may take?
